Tribe means 'a group of people living in a particular place from time immemorial.' India is a home for large number of tribes. The total number of tribal population residing in India is about 8.14%. That is around 84.51 million according to 2001 census and covering 15% of an area. Currently, there are 645 district tribes listed in Scheduled tribes in India.
