Nagas tribes maintain earth as the sacred entity. The nature, spiritual culture and socio economy were intrinsically interconnected. Worship of nature and superstitions of nature are manifested through their sustainable way of utilising the natural resources. They posses knowledge about what varieties of crops to plant, when to sow and seed, which plants are poisonous and which can be used for medicine, how to cure diseases and how to maintain their environment in a state of equilibrium and the mnepatost important subject related to ecological knowledge is agricultural system and resource management. Naga's local knowledge systems are stored in the traditional practices, memories and daily activities. And it is expressed in the form of stories, songs, folklore, proverbs, dance, myths, cultural values, beliefs, rituals, agricultural practices, traditional laws, governance system and livelihood.
They have been practicing of shifting cultivation and sedentary terraced cultivation since immemorial. Traditionally, Nagas practices Alder(Alnusnepatensis) based shifting cultivation.
